What kind of ship ist the „Höegh Esperanza“?
The FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) "Höegh Esperanza" is a floating vessel used for the storage, holding and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Unlike fixed LNG terminals, a FSRU is mobile and can be deployed at various locations. Since December 2022, the FSRU "Höegh Esperanza" has been permanently stationed at the Voslapper Groden terminal in Wilhelmshaven. About once a week, an LNG tanker docks at the "Höegh Espe-ranza" and delivers new LNG to the FSRU.
How does a FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) work
The LNG is stored in special tanks aboard the FSRU. These tanks keep the liquefied natural gas at a temperature of about -162 degrees Celsius to maintain its liquid state.
To feed the natural gas into the German gas network, it is warmed using the temperature of seawater and converted from its liquid state back into a gaseous state. The water is drawn directly from the Jade and serves as an environmen-tally friendly heat source for the regasification process. The seawater is circulated through an extensive piping system on the ship and then discharged back into the Jade through seawater outlets. This process works only in the warmer seasons. In winter, process heat is provided by steam.
The gaseous natural gas is then transferred from the ship to the shore via loading arms and fed into the gas network through a pipeline.
